Um Cavaleiro volta para sua terra natal após guerrear durante as Cruzadas defendendo a Igreja. Porém ao retornar ao seu país, percebe que a peste negra esta matando toda a população. Junta-se a isso, o pensamento coletivo da época, de que tantas mortes representavam o fim do mundo e que todas as desgraças da humanidade eram castigos divinos lançados para punir os homens pelos seus pecados.

Quando o cavalheiro esta se aproximando da sua terra, a morte personificada aparece noticiando-o que ele deveria morrer. O cavaleiro convida a morte a iniciar um jogo de xadrez onde ele permanecerá vivo enquanto manter-se intacto na partida. Nesse curto espaço de existência que lhe resta, o homem começa a questionar-se sobre a morte, a vida e a existência de Deus.

It is one of the strangest and richest classics of world cinema. Max Von Sydow plays a knight returning from the Crusades with his squire to encounter an apocalyptic scenario in their country while Black Death is sweeping it. As he arrives in his place, the Death comes up to say him it is his time. The knight challenges the death to have a chess match, so the Knight would keep himself alive as long as he doesn’t lose the match. As he is fighting against his death, he starts wondering about the existence – or not- of life, death, soul and death.
